Big Brown Bat
Eptisicus fuscus
The Big Brown Bat is the largest species in New York.
This species is the most tolerant of cold temperatures amongst bats in the Northeast and hibernates closest to cave entrances during the winter.
They are one of two bat species in the Northeast that raise their young in trees or along the outside of buildings.
Big Brown Bats forage insects earlier in the evening than many other bat species.
Despite their “big” name, these bats weigh less than an ounce with a 13-inch wing span and a 3-inch long body.
