Big Brown Bat

Eptisicus fuscus

  • The Big Brown Bat is the largest species in New York.

  • This species is the most tolerant of cold temperatures amongst bats in the Northeast and hibernates closest to cave entrances during the winter.

  • They are one of two bat species in the Northeast that raise their young in trees or along the outside of buildings.

  • Big Brown Bats forage insects earlier in the evening than many other bat species.

  • Despite their “big” name, these bats weigh less than an ounce with a 13-inch wing span and a 3-inch long body.
